An hour costs anything from €575 to €1,840, and the most expensive package in the country is one of those hours. The gap is in what the package holds — edited photos, a second stop, the photographer's drive — so compare what each one delivers, not the clock.

The rows look alike because a package has one price wherever the photographer takes it, and the same few photographers cover the whole country: an hour at Jökulsárlón costs what an hour in Reykjavík does. What changes is who goes where. All four photographers list the Blue Lagoon, three list each of the other five places, and only Reykjavík and the Blue Lagoon have two-hour packages; further out, the step up from an hour is 90 minutes or a half day. Across all lengths, the typical package is €808 in Reykjavík, €870 at the Blue Lagoon and €920 at the other four.

What really differs is the drive from Reykjavík, where most photographers live: under an hour to the Blue Lagoon, which is also about 20 minutes from Keflavík airport; about two hours to Gullfoss & Geysir on the Golden Circle; two and a half to Kirkjufell on Snæfellsnes or to Vík on the south coast; and about five each way to Jökulsárlón.

What moves the price

Why an hour costs more in Iceland. A typical hour at €750 is more than in most of Europe, for practical reasons. Iceland is among the continent's most expensive countries to live and work in. Most photographers are based around the capital, so a session anywhere else starts with a drive. Weather moves sessions more often than almost anywhere, and a backup date is a day the photographer keeps free for you. And around the December solstice the sun is up in Reykjavík only from about 11:20 to 15:30.

Edited photos. The typical hour brings about 20 edited photos, 90 minutes about 25, two hours about 30 and a half day about 35. Packages of the same length differ mostly in what they deliver, so compare photo counts before prices.

The occasion. Couples, families, proposals and engagements book by the hour. Iceland is one of Europe's classic elopement destinations, and elopements here are priced as half days: from €1,265 to €1,495, typically €1,380 for about 35 edited photos — time for a short ceremony at a waterfall or on black sand and portraits at a second stop. A full day is quoted individually; the officiant and the paperwork are arranged separately.

Season and sunrise. A package costs the same in July as in January, at midnight as at noon; only the light and the odds change. In late June the sun sets around midnight and rises before 3 am, so couples trade sunrise for the late evening. In December there are about four hours of low sun, and it rises around eleven. A sunrise slot costs the same as any other. From September to April a clear night can bring the aurora, which nobody can promise, and with four photographers to share, summer dates go first.

Travel. Distance does not change the price on the page, but it changes the day. For a photographer based in the capital, an hour at Jökulsárlón means about ten hours on the road; at Kirkjufell or Vík, about five. Far out, a 90-minute or half-day package makes better use of the trip. Before you book, check where the photographer starts from on your date and whether the drive is covered.

Group size. Up to eight people, the price does not move. From nine up, most packages cost 50% more.

Tickets and tours. No package includes the Blue Lagoon's own ticket, boat tours on Jökulsárlón or ice caves in winter.

What is included in the price
