Weather days. Gullfoss sits at the edge of the highlands, and in wind its spray soaks everything within reach. Storms move sessions in any month, so a backup day is part of the plan — a date the photographer keeps free for you.

Winter light. Around the December solstice the sun is up here only from about 11:20 to 15:20. Four hours of daylight limit how many sessions fit in a day; in return, the low sun makes the spray and the steam glow.

Crowds, not prices. Tours reach both sites from mid-morning to late afternoon. An early or late session costs the same and gives you the paths nearly to yourselves.

Where the shoot happens

• Strokkur. It erupts every few minutes, usually every five to ten; the turquoise bubble just before the burst is the frame to wait for. Stand where the wind carries the spray away from you, and stay behind the ropes: the water is close to boiling.
• The Geysir field. Steaming vents and pools along the paths; the Great Geysir, which gave all geysers their name, rarely erupts now.
• Gullfoss from the upper viewpoint. The full two-tier drop into the canyon: the frame for scale.
