What moves the price, and why Iceland costs more

Why an hour costs more here. A typical hour at €750 is more than the same hour costs in most of Europe, for practical reasons. Iceland is among Europe's most expensive countries to live and work in. Most photographers are based in and around the capital, so any session outside it starts with a drive nobody books. Weather moves sessions more often than almost anywhere, and a backup date is a date the photographer keeps free for you. Winter light comes in a short window: around the December solstice the sun is up from about 11:20 to 15:30.

Edited photos, more than minutes. The typical hour brings about 17 edited photos, 90 minutes about 25, two hours about 30. If you want a full gallery rather than a handful of portraits, the longer package costs less per photo.

The occasion. Weddings and elopements are quoted by the day or half day. Season and hour. A package costs the same in July as in January, at midnight as at noon. Only the light changes: soft for hours around midsummer, four hours of it in December, then a long blue hour.

Distance. In the city everything is a short walk or drive; Grótta is ten minutes west of the centre. The Golden Circle and the South Coast are day trips, for a longer package or a booking of their own.

• Edited high-resolution photos in a private, password-protected gallery: watermarked previews first, then, once you approve the delivery, the photos you booked at full resolution, singly or as a ZIP.
• Delivery on the schedule stated in the package.
• Payment held by the platform until your photos are delivered; your card is charged only once the photographer confirms the date.
• Cancellation: a full refund 7 or more days before, 50% between 7 and 3 days, nothing inside 3 days. One free reschedule if you ask 48 hours ahead; moving for bad weather is always free.
• Extra photos: photographers usually shoot more than the package promises, and those frames may be offered in the same gallery at a price the photographer sets — optional, never instead of what you booked.

Prices are per session, not per person; groups of nine or more pay 50% more on most packages. Entry tickets and transport between locations are not included unless the package says so.

Three sample budgets

A one-hour couples shoot at sunrise. In June the sun rises before 3 am, so most couples trade sunrise for the late evening, when the light is just as low. From October to March sunrise comes at a civilised hour — a little after 8 in mid-October — and the old harbour is still quiet. €575 at the cheapest, €750 for the typical package with about 17 edited photos.

A two-hour family session. Tjörnin, the city pond with its ducks and swans, then the painted houses of the old town and the harbour: €1,035 for two hours and about 30 edited photos, the price of all three two-hour packages. With small children 90 minutes is often enough: from €865, typically €920 with around 25 photos.

A proposal. The photographer waits by Harpa or on the waterfront like any passer-by, then turns the next half hour into a couples session. One hour is enough: from €575, typically €750. Ninety minutes, typically €920, adds Hallgrímskirkja or the Sun Voyager after the yes.

Where the shoot happens

• Harpa and the old harbour at blue hour. The concert hall's glass facade lights up after dark and doubles in the harbour water, with fishing and whale-watching boats a few steps away. In December blue hour starts around four in the afternoon.
• Hallgrímskirkja, early. The church at the top of Skólavörðustígur is the city's landmark and its busiest square by mid-morning. Early on, the steps and the statue of Leifur Eiríksson in front of it are yours.
• Grótta lighthouse. On the tip of Seltjarnarnes. The causeway to the lighthouse is passable only at low tide, and the island closes for nesting birds in late spring and early summer; the shore facing it stays open. Dark enough for the northern lights from September to April.
• The Sun Voyager and the waterfront path. The steel ship sculpture on Sæbraut, with Mount Esja across the bay. Busy at sunset, calm and wide in the morning.
• Tjörnin and the old town. The pond by City Hall, the painted houses on its bank and the lanes around it: sheltered from the wind, which counts for a lot here, and easy with children.
