The Almannagjá gorge, where the path runs along the actual rift between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, Öxarárfoss tumbling over the gorge wall, the viewing platform above the rift valley with lake Þingvallavatn stretching away, and the little white church down on the plain. Early morning, before the Golden Circle buses arrive around ten — the Almannagjá path is close to empty and the low sun rakes along the rift walls. Late evening is the other window: the buses are gone, and in summer the midnight-sun light lingers on the valley for hours.
