The loop is roughly 300 kilometres of paved road, and the first stop is close: Þingvellir is about forty-five minutes to an hour from the city, Geysir and Gullfoss around ninety minutes. Most sessions use two to three hours on the ground plus the driving, and the natural shape is Þingvellir first, Gullfoss last. Everyone is back in Reykjavik the same evening, which is why this is the one region that works on an arrival day or a long layover.

The ends of the day, in every season. Summer keeps the light low and warm late into the evening, and around midsummer it barely leaves at all; winter never lets the sun climb, so the whole short day behaves like golden hour and the falls grow ice. From roughly November to March the paths ice over as well, so spikes belong in the bag — and on a sunny morning the mist at Gullfoss stands a rainbow across the canyon.

The coaches from the capital arrive from about eleven and thin out after four, so an early or late slot changes the pictures more than any lens does. Þingvellir is a national park and a UNESCO World Heritage site: keep to the marked paths and boardwalks, leave the ground as you found it, and a drone needs a permit from the park rather than a hopeful launch. The sites are free to walk; the car parks at Þingvellir and Gullfoss are paid.

Everything is arranged with you alone, over chat or a quick call your partner never sees. It's the dream, and it's doable — with a plan B. From September to April, on a clear night with aurora activity, your photographer takes you to a dark spot away from town, sets up for long exposures, and you propose under the glow. But the lights answer to space weather, not to bookings, so the professional approach is a two-part plan: a guaranteed daytime proposal window at a spectacular location, plus an aurora chase on the best-forecast night of your trip. If the sky delivers, you get both — the question at sunset and portraits under the aurora with the ring already on.

Early morning, almost always. Iceland's famous locations get busy from mid-morning, and a proposal wants privacy — at 7am you can have Reynisfjara or Seljalandsfoss nearly to yourselves. The light plays along too: in summer, early sessions catch soft low sun (or book late evening and use the midnight sun); in winter, sunrise happens at a civilised hour and the golden light lasts half the day. Your photographer will suggest the exact window for your date, because in Iceland the answer changes month to month.
