It is measured in hours along Route 1: Seljalandsfoss about two, Skógafoss a little over two, Vík two and a half, Skaftafell four and a half, and Jökulsárlón with Diamond Beach roughly five. One session covers one part of it — the waterfalls and Vík in the west, or the glacier, the lagoon and the ice in the east. Clients shooting the eastern end are almost always staying nearby rather than driving out from the city that morning.

Summer gives long, late golden hours and, around midsummer, light that never fully goes; winter gives one long low golden day and, on clear nights from September to April, northern lights over black sand. Overcast is not a loss here — grey skies are what make the ice at Jökulsárlón read blue, and they hold detail in the white water at Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss that bright sun burns away.

Two things need real respect. Reynisfjara and Diamond Beach get sneaker waves — surges that run far past the wet line with no warning, into a sea cold enough to kill. Nobody turns their back on the water, nobody stands on wet sand, and the sea cave is skipped when the warning lights are red. And the wind here is the strongest in an already windy country: it decides dresses, veils and hairstyles, and on a bad day it closes a beach outright, so agree a sheltered alternative with your photographer when you book.

Everything is arranged with you alone, over chat or a quick call your partner never sees. You get the exact spot pinned on a map, an exact time, and a cover story — in Iceland the easiest one ever invented: you're simply sightseeing. Your photographer arrives early and shoots the scenery like any tourist; at popular spots like Reynisfjara or Kirkjufell nobody looks twice at someone with a camera. You walk to the agreed mark, give the signal — take off your hat, point at the view — and go down on one knee. The photographer is already shooting and keeps shooting through the tears, the yes, and the first look at the ring.

It's the dream, and it's doable — with a plan B. From September to April, on a clear night with aurora activity, your photographer takes you to a dark spot away from town, sets up for long exposures, and you propose under the glow. But the lights answer to space weather, not to bookings, so the professional approach is a two-part plan: a guaranteed daytime proposal window at a spectacular location, plus an aurora chase on the best-forecast night of your trip. If the sky delivers, you get both — the question at sunset and portraits under the aurora with the ring already on.

Early morning, almost always. Iceland's famous locations get busy from mid-morning, and a proposal wants privacy — at 7am you can have Reynisfjara or Seljalandsfoss nearly to yourselves. The light plays along too: in summer, early sessions catch soft low sun (or book late evening and use the midnight sun); in winter, sunrise happens at a civilised hour and the golden light lasts half the day. Your photographer will suggest the exact window for your date, because in Iceland the answer changes month to month.
