It is measured in hours along Route 1: Seljalandsfoss about two, Skógafoss a little over two, Vík two and a half, Skaftafell four and a half, and Jökulsárlón with Diamond Beach roughly five. One session covers one part of it — the waterfalls and Vík in the west, or the glacier, the lagoon and the ice in the east. Clients shooting the eastern end are almost always staying nearby rather than driving out from the city that morning.

Summer gives long, late golden hours and, around midsummer, light that never fully goes; winter gives one long low golden day and, on clear nights from September to April, northern lights over black sand. Overcast is not a loss here — grey skies are what make the ice at Jökulsárlón read blue, and they hold detail in the white water at Skógafoss and Seljalandsfoss that bright sun burns away.

Two things need real respect. Reynisfjara and Diamond Beach get sneaker waves — surges that run far past the wet line with no warning, into a sea cold enough to kill. Nobody turns their back on the water, nobody stands on wet sand, and the sea cave is skipped when the warning lights are red. And the wind here is the strongest in an already windy country: it decides dresses, veils and hairstyles, and on a bad day it closes a beach outright, so agree a sheltered alternative with your photographer when you book.

Yes — Iceland is one of the friendliest countries in the world for it, which is a big part of why elopements boomed here. You don't need residency or citizenship; you submit your paperwork (birth certificates, certificates of marital status, and divorce decrees where relevant) to the District Commissioner in advance — start several weeks before your date to be comfortable — and the marriage is internationally recognised. A legal ceremony needs an authorised officiant and two witnesses. Many couples skip the bureaucracy entirely: they handle the legal signing at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Iceland, which needs no permission at all and photographs identically. Your photographer has done both many times and can point you to experienced local celebrants.

In Iceland, longer than you'd guess — not because ceremonies run long, but because the island does. The classic format is a half-day (4-6 hours): getting ready, the ceremony at your chosen spot, portraits at one or two more locations along the road, and the small in-between moments — sharing sandwiches in the car while rain passes, warming hands on a thermos — that end up being half the story of the day. A full-day adventure elopement stretches from Seljalandsfoss to Jökulsárlón and back through sunset. If your budget is tight, two hours centred on the ceremony and one nearby location still gives you a complete, beautiful record; better one place shot deeply than four shot in a hurry.

Each season is a different wedding. June-July: the midnight sun, ceremonies at 10pm in golden light, lupines in bloom, every road open — but the famous spots are busiest. September and early October: autumn colour on the moss, first auroras, thinner crowds — many photographers' favourite. Deep winter (November-February): the boldest choice — frost, ice caves, a white dress against black sand and snow, the chance of vows under the northern lights, but short days and real storm risk, so build slack into your itinerary. April-May: quiet, mild, and the light stretches longer every day. Whatever you pick, plan the ceremony for early morning or late evening; midday belongs to the tour buses.
