They don't have to — that's the point. Our family photographers don't direct children, they follow them: throwing pebbles into a glacial river, racing the wind, waiting for the geyser. The best family photos from Iceland are never the ones where everyone looks at the camera; they're the ones where your kids are mid-discovery. Photographers bring games, take breaks when energy dips, and time sessions around naps and snacks. A meltdown pause costs ten minutes, not the shoot.

Yes, with an important caveat: location choice matters more in Iceland than almost anywhere. Our photographers pick spots with boardwalks, barriers and short walks — Thingvellir's paths, the Geysir area, Reykjavik's parks — and stay well back from sneaker waves at black-sand beaches and from cliff edges. They also watch the wind forecast, because Icelandic gusts can knock a toddler over. Tell your photographer your kids' ages when booking and the route is planned around them, including where to retreat indoors if the weather bites.

Warm first, cute second — a cold child ends any shoot fast. Wool base layers, insulated waterproof outer layers, hats and mittens, and rubber-soled boots. Colour-wise, mustard, rust, deep red and forest green pop beautifully against basalt and moss, and knitted lopapeysa-style sweaters look wonderful in photos. Skip character prints and neon. Bring one full change of clothes per child; someone always finds a puddle, and in Iceland the puddles are glacial.

Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot at the Blue Lagoon: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — from a short session on the lava-field walkways around the lagoon to a longer shoot that adds the wider Reykjanes lava landscapes nearby.

The milky-blue water against coal-black lava is the whole show: the wooden walkways that thread the lava field around the lagoon, the footbridges over the water, the steam drifting across the surface, and the moss-covered Reykjanes lava fields just outside. The contrast of turquoise, black rock and steam works in every season.

The first entry slot of the morning or the last hours before closing — the walkways are quietest then, and on cold mornings the steam is thickest, which is exactly what the pictures want. In winter, blue hour turns the water electric against the dark lava; in summer the late-evening light stays soft for hours.
