The lava corridor at the entrance

Before the ticket desk, the approach to the Blue Lagoon runs through a cut in the lava: a straight corridor with black, broken walls rising above head height on both sides and a strip of sky overhead. It was built to hide the buildings until the last moment, and it happens to be the best portrait set on the property — symmetrical, sheltered, graphic, and outside the paid area.

The walls do the work. Stand the couple in the middle of the corridor and the two dark planes frame them; shoot from low with a wide lens and the rock leans in; shoot long from one end and the corridor compresses into a black slot with two figures in it. Because the light arrives only from above, faces get a soft top light with no harsh side shadows, which is why this spot works at midday when nothing else does. In winter, the corridor is lit at night and turns into a completely different, moodier set.

The practical advantages matter for planning. It is out of the wind, which on Reykjanes is not a small thing; it is a two-minute walk from the car park; and it needs no ticket, so it can be photographed before or after a lagoon visit, or without one at all. Keep the path clear — it is the way in and out for every guest — and work between arrivals rather than blocking the corridor.

The caution is the same as for the whole site: Reykjanes has seen volcanic activity and closures in recent years, and access to this area can change at short notice. Check the current status of the road and the site before setting out, and have a fallback on the way back toward Reykjavik.
