Stuðlagil is the densest set of basalt columns in Iceland, and until recently almost nobody had seen it: the glacial river Jökulsá á Dal ran high and brown through the gorge until a dam upstream took the meltwater in 2009, dropping the level and turning the water a clear blue-green. What emerged is a canyon walled in grey hexagonal columns, tilted and stacked like organ pipes, with the river threading between them. There are two ways in and they give different pictures. From the east bank at Grund, a short walk from the car park leads to a viewing platform looking down on the columns — quick, safe, and the classic frame. From the west bank at Klaustursel, a five-kilometre track each way brings you down to the riverbed itself, where the columns rise above your head; allow half a day and proper boots. The colour is seasonal: the blue is at its best from roughly June to September, while spring meltwater and heavy rain can turn the river brown and high for days at a time. The canyon holds shade for much of the day, so morning and evening light along the rim beats midday, and a bright overcast keeps the columns' texture. The last stretch of Road 923 is gravel and rough in places, comfortable in summer and best avoided in winter ice; there are no facilities at either car park. On the ground, keep off the column tops near the edge — they are loose, wet and higher above the water than they look — and give the marked paths the respect the farms here ask for. Egilsstaðir, with its airport, is about an hour away.
