Photographers in Seyðisfjörður

Seyðisfjörður is reached over the Fjarðarheiði mountain pass from Egilsstaðir, and the descent is the overture: twenty-five switchback minutes down a waterfall-lined valley into a fjord so narrow the mountains seem to close behind you. The frame everyone comes for is Regnbogagata, the rainbow-painted lane leading straight to the powder-blue timber church, Bláa kirkjan — shoot it early, because every cruise-ship and ferry day sends its passengers straight there; the town's Norwegian-built wooden houses from its herring boom fill out the streetscape in ochre, teal and cream. Around the village the fjord does the rest: the Fjarðará river steps down in cascades beside the pass road, calm mornings mirror the mountains in the lagoon, and the Tvísöngur sound-sculpture concrete domes on the hillside make an offbeat frame with the fjord below. The weekly Norröna ferry from Denmark docks here, and cruise calls concentrate the crowds into hours — check the port schedule and book around it. Winter access depends on the pass, which closes in storms; in return, snowed-in Seyðisfjörður under aurora is as intimate as this country gets.
