Two to two and a half hours by road, paved the whole way. Once you are on the peninsula the distances are short — Kirkjufell, Arnarstapi and Stykkishólmur are twenty to forty minutes apart — so two locations in one session is realistic here, which it is not on the south coast. Hraunfossar sits inland on the way out from the capital, about an hour and three quarters, and makes a natural first or last stop.

Sunrise and the last light. Kirkjufell in particular is a two-minute walk from the car park and busy in between, so the ends of the day are the difference between an empty frame and a row of tripods. Summer evenings stay bright until nearly midnight; winter turns the whole short day golden; and from September to April the aurora over the peak is the peninsula's signature — a clear forecast makes it possible, never certain.

Changeable, and faster than almost anywhere else on the list. The glacier makes its own weather: the cone is clear one hour and swallowed the next, rain arrives sideways, and the wind off Breiðafjörður is serious rather than picturesque. Build one or two hours of flexibility into the day and agree a fallback when you book — Stykkishólmur is the region's bad-weather plan, because everything worth photographing there is within a ten-minute walk.

They don't have to — that's the point. Our family photographers don't direct children, they follow them: throwing pebbles into a glacial river, racing the wind, waiting for the geyser. The best family photos from Iceland are never the ones where everyone looks at the camera; they're the ones where your kids are mid-discovery. Photographers bring games, take breaks when energy dips, and time sessions around naps and snacks. A meltdown pause costs ten minutes, not the shoot.

Yes, with an important caveat: location choice matters more in Iceland than almost anywhere. Our photographers pick spots with boardwalks, barriers and short walks — Thingvellir's paths, the Geysir area, Reykjavik's parks — and stay well back from sneaker waves at black-sand beaches and from cliff edges. They also watch the wind forecast, because Icelandic gusts can knock a toddler over. Tell your photographer your kids' ages when booking and the route is planned around them, including where to retreat indoors if the weather bites.

Warm first, cute second — a cold child ends any shoot fast. Wool base layers, insulated waterproof outer layers, hats and mittens, and rubber-soled boots. Colour-wise, mustard, rust, deep red and forest green pop beautifully against basalt and moss, and knitted lopapeysa-style sweaters look wonderful in photos. Skip character prints and neon. Bring one full change of clothes per child; someone always finds a puddle, and in Iceland the puddles are glacial.
