Wedding Photographer at Dyrhólaey
Dyrhólaey gives an elopement the whole south coast in one turn of the head — the arch, the lighthouse, black sand to the horizon and glaciers inland, with the wind writing its own choreography.
About Dyrhólaey
Dyrhólaey is the promontory that closes the black coast west of Vík: a 120-metre headland with a lighthouse on top and, below it, the sea arch that gives the place its name — the door-hole the old sailors steered through on a dare. There are two levels and they give very different photos. The lower plateau, five minutes off Road 218, looks east along Reynisfjara's black sand to the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and is reachable in any car. The upper level climbs a short, steep track to the lighthouse for the long view over the arch, the glacier line inland and the whole southern coast — the track is rough and better with a high-clearance or 4×4 car, and it closes in bad weather. Puffins nest on these cliffs from roughly May to mid-August; parts of the reserve close during nesting, sometimes overnight, sometimes for weeks, and the dates change every year — check the current closure before fixing a date, and keep a Vík alternative in the plan. Two safety notes decide how a session runs here. The cliff edges are undercut and unfenced: stay well back from the lip, no matter how good the frame looks. And the beach below is sneaker-wave country — waves that run far up the sand without warning, from a sea that is deadly cold — so shoreline photos are taken high on the beach and never turn your back on the water. Wind is the third character: this headland is one of the windiest corners of a windy country, so plan dresses, veils and hairstyles for it. Sunset, from spring to autumn, lights the arch from the west and turns the wet sand into a mirror.

The most photogenic locations for your Dyrhólaey photoshoot
The lighthouse clifftop
The upper level, up a steep track, with the white lighthouse, the arch below and glaciers on the inland horizon.
Best time: Sunset in summer; any clear hour in winter
Use the lighthouse small in frame with the couple back from the edge — it reads as scale, not subject. Check the road and closure status first.
The lower plateau
The easy level, reachable in any car, looking east along the black sand to the Reynisdrangar sea stacks.
Best time: Sunset, or any hour in winter's low light
Long lens east to pull the Reynisdrangar stacks in behind the couple. Stay back from the grass edge — the drop starts where it ends.
The arch from the western bay
The profile view of the door-hole itself, with surf running through the opening and sea stacks beyond.
Best time: Late evening, when the sun sits behind the opening
Longer lens, simple horizon, arch large in frame. Shoot it from the cliff — the beach directly below is sneaker-wave ground.
The puffin cliffs, May to August
Grass-topped cliff edges where puffins nest through the summer — long lens, marked viewpoints and closures to check before you go.
Best time: Evenings from roughly May to mid-August
200mm and up from the marked areas; never step onto the burrow grass. Check the year's closure dates before booking around the birds.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should we book our Iceland wedding photographer?
For summer dates (June-August) and the aurora-season Saturdays, 6-12 months ahead is realistic — Iceland's wedding photographer pool is small and destination couples book early. Shoulder-season and weekday weddings often find excellent availability at 2-3 months. Book the photographer as early as the venue: in a wedding here, the images are arguably the point — most couples choose Iceland precisely for how it will look. When you enquire, share your date, venue or region, and rough guest count; you'll get portfolios matched to your kind of wedding rather than a generic list.
How many hours of wedding coverage do we need?
Icelandic weddings usually need less ballroom time and more road time than weddings elsewhere. A typical intimate wedding books 6-8 hours: preparations, ceremony, family groups, then a generous portrait block that may involve driving to a waterfall or beach — that drive is where Iceland earns its keep, so don't squeeze it. Large hotel weddings with evening parties run to 10-12 hours or a second shooter. And consider the local trick: a shorter wedding-day coverage plus a separate day-after session in full wedding wear at the landscape locations. It costs less than extending the day and delivers the epic frames without stealing you from your own party.
What's the weather plan for an Iceland wedding?
Assume four seasons will attend your wedding, and plan so that none of them can ruin it. The practical framework our photographers use: an indoor or sheltered ceremony option confirmed with the venue; a portrait window kept flexible within the day rather than fixed to the minute; locations chosen in pairs — one exposed and spectacular, one sheltered and intimate — with the call made on the day; and clear agreements about the couple's tolerance (some couples want the storm photos; some want to stay dry — both are valid and both make great galleries). Wind is managed with location angles and a firm grip on the veil; rain with clear umbrellas that photograph beautifully. The photos from the wild-weather weddings are, year after year, the ones that go viral.
How much does a photoshoot at Dyrhólaey cost?
Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot at Dyrhólaey: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — from a short session on the lower plateau facing the arch to a longer shoot that adds the lighthouse level above and the black beach at Vík ten minutes away.
What are the best photo spots at Dyrhólaey?
Four, and they are minutes apart. The lower plateau, easy in any car, looks east along the black sand to the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. The clifftop by the lighthouse takes in the arch, the coast and the glaciers inland. The eastern edge above Reynisfjara gives the long view down the beach. And the little bay west of the headland puts the arch in profile with the surf running through it.
When can you photograph puffins at Dyrhólaey?
Roughly from May to mid-August, when the birds are ashore to nest on these cliffs — evenings are the liveliest hours. The same nesting brings closures: parts of the reserve, and sometimes the upper road to the lighthouse, shut during the season, occasionally overnight and occasionally for weeks. The dates change every year, so check the current closure before you fix a date and keep Vík or Reynisfjara as the backup.
