About The black dunes at Stokksnes
Get directionsBehind the beach, the wind has heaped the black sand into low dunes topped with clumps of marram-like grass, copper in autumn and green in summer. They give depth to a frame the mirror cannot: foreground texture, a path between the mounds, and the mountain rising beyond.
This is the reliable half of a Vestrahorn session. It needs no tide and tolerates weather that would kill a reflection, and the dune ridges make natural leading lines toward the peaks. Walk in from the parking area and work the gaps between the mounds; keeping the horizon low puts more mountain in the frame, and a longer lens compresses the dunes into stacked ribbons.
The grass is fragile and slow-growing, so stay on the sand paths between the mounds rather than climbing over them — the farm asks for it and the pictures are better from below anyway. Wind picks up the black sand hard enough to sting and to get inside a lens: work in bursts, keep the camera covered between them, and turn your back to the gusts when changing anything.

Any hour; low winter sun and autumn colour are the best of it
Tips
Keep the horizon low and use a longer lens to stack the dunes. Stay on the sand between the mounds — the grass takes years to recover.
