Hafnarstræti and the red heart traffic lights

Hafnarstræti is Akureyri's pedestrian street: two blocks of low painted timber and small shopfronts running below the church hill. The town's best-known quirk lives here — its traffic lights show a red heart instead of a red disc, a gesture from a hard year that stuck and became the town's signature. It is a small thing that gives a northern town portrait an anchor, and clients recognise it instantly.

Work it two ways. Tight: a long lens on the heart glowing above a blurred street, with the couple soft behind or in front of it. Wide: the street itself, painted facades on both sides, the church towers closing the view up the hill. Winter is the better season for this — the lights read strongly against a blue-grey afternoon, the street is decorated and lit through the long dark, and by three in the afternoon it looks like evening.

Around the street there is more than the heart. The old timber houses on the slope above, the harbour five minutes down, and the little squares off Hafnarstræti all give sheltered backgrounds when the fjord wind is up — which in Akureyri is less often than the coast, because the town sits deep in a fjord and is one of the calmer places in the north.

Practical and neighbourly: the traffic lights are on live junctions, so frame the heart from the pavement rather than standing in the roadway, and keep an eye on cars turning in from the side streets. Shopfronts are private businesses — a quick word before shooting in a doorway goes a long way in a town this size. And in winter the pavements are genuinely slippery; flat, gripped shoes make the difference between a session and a fall.
