About Westman Islands

The Westman Islands are fifteen islands and thirty sea stacks off the south coast, and only Heimaey is inhabited: a fishing town of four thousand people wedged between a harbour and two volcanoes. The frames here are unlike anywhere on the mainland. The ferry runs in through a gap in the cliffs that feels like a gate; the red cone of Eldfell, which erupted in 1973 and buried a third of the town, rises straight above the houses and can be walked in half an hour; Herjólfsdalur is a green amphitheatre of a valley; and the cliffs at Stórhöfði, the windiest point in Iceland, hold the largest puffin colony in the world from roughly May to mid-August. Getting here is part of the planning. The Herjólfur ferry sails from Landeyjahöfn in about thirty-five minutes, but when weather or sand closes that harbour it is rerouted to Þorlákshöfn and the crossing becomes two and a half to three hours — check the sailing on the day, book vehicle space well ahead in summer, and build slack into the schedule. There is also a short flight from Reykjavík. Once on the island everything is within a few minutes' drive, which makes a two-hour session genuinely varied: harbour, lava field, cliff-top and town in one loop. Wind and cliff edges are the standing cautions — the drops are sheer and unfenced, and the gusts here are not ordinary gusts. Summer evenings stay light until well past eleven; in winter the town's colours and storm light are the draw, when the boat runs.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a photoshoot in the Westman Islands cost?

Professional photoshoots in the Westman Islands start from €279. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — a short session covers the harbour and the cliffs above it, a longer one loops the island for Eldfell's red slopes, Herjólfsdalur and the puffin cliffs. Ferry or flight tickets, yours and the photographer's, are booked separately.

How do you get to Heimaey, and how long does the ferry take?

The Herjólfur ferry sails from Landeyjahöfn on the south coast and takes about thirty-five minutes. When weather or drifting sand closes that harbour — which happens, especially in winter — sailings are rerouted to Þorlákshöfn and the crossing becomes two and a half to three hours. Check the sailing on the day, book vehicle space well ahead in summer, and leave slack in the schedule. There is also a short flight from Reykjavík, and most photographers will meet you at the harbour or the airfield.

When can you see puffins in the Westman Islands?

Roughly from May to mid-August, and the colony here is the largest in the world — the cliffs at Stórhöfði and along the southern coast fill with birds, and evenings are the busiest hours. Keep to the marked viewpoints, stay back from the burrows and the cliff edges, and use a long lens rather than closing in: the nesting ground is fragile and the drops are sheer. By late August the birds are gone and the island turns to storm light and empty roads.

What are the best photo spots on Heimaey?

The harbour entrance, where the cliffs close in and the ferry threads through — best shot from the quay or from the boat itself. The red cinder slope of Eldfell, half an hour up on foot, with the town and the 1973 lava field below. Herjólfsdalur, a green bowl of a valley ringed by cliffs. And Stórhöfði at the southern tip for open ocean, wind and puffins. Everything is within a few minutes' drive of everything else, which makes even a short session varied.

What if my kids won't cooperate during the photoshoot?

They don't have to — that's the point. Our family photographers don't direct children, they follow them: throwing pebbles into a glacial river, racing the wind, waiting for the geyser. The best family photos from Iceland are never the ones where everyone looks at the camera; they're the ones where your kids are mid-discovery. Photographers bring games, take breaks when energy dips, and time sessions around naps and snacks. A meltdown pause costs ten minutes, not the shoot.

Is an Iceland family photoshoot safe with small children?

Yes, with an important caveat: location choice matters more in Iceland than almost anywhere. Our photographers pick spots with boardwalks, barriers and short walks — Thingvellir's paths, the Geysir area, Reykjavik's parks — and stay well back from sneaker waves at black-sand beaches and from cliff edges. They also watch the wind forecast, because Icelandic gusts can knock a toddler over. Tell your photographer your kids' ages when booking and the route is planned around them, including where to retreat indoors if the weather bites.
