About North Iceland

North Iceland means Akureyri and the ring of places around Lake Mývatn: a forty-five-minute flight from Reykjavík, or about five hours by road, which is why nearly everyone who books a session up here has come deliberately rather than on a whim. Once you have arrived, the distances collapse. Goðafoss is thirty-five minutes from Akureyri, Mývatn about an hour, Húsavík an hour, and Dettifoss roughly another hour beyond the lake. Akureyri supplies the town frames: the stepped facade of Akureyrarkirkja above its staircase, wooden houses in dark reds and blues, the heart-shaped traffic lights and a botanical garden that flowers from June into September — the easy hour for a family. Goðafoss folds a broad turquoise horseshoe five minutes off the Ring Road and faces north, so around midsummer the low sun drops into the frame behind the water. Mývatn is a rotation of backdrops rather than one: the lava towers of Dimmuborgir, the green pseudocraters on the south shore, and the rust-orange steam vents at Hverir, where the roped paths are the only safe ground. Midges swarm on calm summer days, so a breeze is a blessing here. Húsavík adds a wooden church over a working harbour and summer whale watching in Skjálfandi Bay — photos of your reactions on deck are a real option. Dettifoss is the heavy artillery, and the western paved bank suits a dressed-up couple better than the summer-only gravel road on the east. June is the region's argument: the midnight sun rolls along the fjord and an eleven o'clock session is normal. From September to April, fifteen minutes out of Akureyri is aurora country, and steam under the lights is a frame the south cannot match. Winter shortens the day to one long low golden hour and closes roads at short notice, so check conditions the morning of the shoot.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should we book our Iceland wedding photographer?

For summer dates (June-August) and the aurora-season Saturdays, 6-12 months ahead is realistic — Iceland's wedding photographer pool is small and destination couples book early. Shoulder-season and weekday weddings often find excellent availability at 2-3 months. Book the photographer as early as the venue: in a wedding here, the images are arguably the point — most couples choose Iceland precisely for how it will look. When you enquire, share your date, venue or region, and rough guest count; you'll get portfolios matched to your kind of wedding rather than a generic list.

How many hours of wedding coverage do we need?

Icelandic weddings usually need less ballroom time and more road time than weddings elsewhere. A typical intimate wedding books 6-8 hours: preparations, ceremony, family groups, then a generous portrait block that may involve driving to a waterfall or beach — that drive is where Iceland earns its keep, so don't squeeze it. Large hotel weddings with evening parties run to 10-12 hours or a second shooter. And consider the local trick: a shorter wedding-day coverage plus a separate day-after session in full wedding wear at the landscape locations. It costs less than extending the day and delivers the epic frames without stealing you from your own party.

What's the weather plan for an Iceland wedding?

Assume four seasons will attend your wedding, and plan so that none of them can ruin it. The practical framework our photographers use: an indoor or sheltered ceremony option confirmed with the venue; a portrait window kept flexible within the day rather than fixed to the minute; locations chosen in pairs — one exposed and spectacular, one sheltered and intimate — with the call made on the day; and clear agreements about the couple's tolerance (some couples want the storm photos; some want to stay dry — both are valid and both make great galleries). Wind is managed with location angles and a firm grip on the veil; rain with clear umbrellas that photograph beautifully. The photos from the wild-weather weddings are, year after year, the ones that go viral.

How do you get to North Iceland, and how far apart are the locations?

Akureyri is a forty-five-minute flight from Reykjavik or about a five-hour drive, and the flight is the sensible option for a short trip. Once you are up there the region is compact: Goðafoss is thirty-five minutes from Akureyri, Mývatn and Húsavík about an hour, Dettifoss another hour past the lake. A session normally takes one of them, or Akureyri plus Goðafoss, which sit on the same road.

When is the best season and hour in the north?

June, if you can choose. The midnight sun rolls along Eyjafjörður and a session at eleven at night is normal; Goðafoss faces north, so around the solstice the low sun drops into the frame behind the water. From September to April the aurora starts fifteen minutes outside Akureyri, and steam at Hverir under the lights is a frame the south coast cannot match. Winter shortens the day to one long low golden hour and closes roads at short notice, so check conditions the morning of the shoot.

Can we photograph whales at Húsavík?

In summer, yes — with the caveat that they are wild animals and nobody can promise one. Humpbacks feed in Skjálfandi Bay through the season and boats run daily from the harbour; the first morning departure gives the calmest water. What the session actually guarantees is the boat, the harbour and your reactions on deck, with a breach as the bonus. Either way Húsavík carries the shoot on its own: the wooden church above the harbour and the geothermal baths on the cliff edge.
