Photographers in Mývatn

Mývatn is not one backdrop but a rotation of them around a shallow, bird-rich lake. Dimmuborgir, the 'dark fortress', is a maze of collapsed lava towers and arches — church-window openings in black rock that frame couples like gothic architecture, snow-dusted into monochrome in winter. The Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters on the south shore are green, walkable rings that give gentle family frames with the lake behind. East over the ridge, Hverir is another planet entirely: rust-orange mud plain, boiling pots, roaring steam vents under Námafjall — the steam backlights into gold in low sun, and the smell of sulphur is part of the experience; keep everyone on the roped paths, the crust is thin and genuinely hot. The Mývatn Nature Baths, the north's answer to the Blue Lagoon, add a milky-blue soak frame with a fraction of the crowd. Midges swarm in calm summer weather — they named the lake — so a breezy day is a blessing here; head nets live in every local photographer's bag.
