Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot at Fjaðrárgljúfur: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — a short session covers the first viewpoints on the rim path, a longer one walks the full path to the end platform and adds the riverbed at the canyon mouth.

The rim path is the session. The first bend, five minutes up, already gives the classic S-curve of mossy pinnacles; the middle viewpoints look straight down a hundred metres to the river; and the platform at the far end frames the whole gorge back toward the car park. At the bottom, where the Fjaðrá braids over gravel at the canyon mouth, you get the same walls from below with water at your feet.

Yes, and it matters for planning. The canyon has been closed for weeks at a time in spring, when meltwater turns the ground to mud and the moss is at its most fragile, and shorter closures happen after heavy rain. Check the current status before you fix a date, and treat the marked path as the whole of the site: climbing down to the ledges damages vegetation that takes decades to grow back, and rangers do enforce it. Assume drones need a permit here rather than launching and hoping.

Early morning for quiet: from midday in summer the path carries a steady line of visitors and the end platform takes turns. For light, a bright overcast day is better than full sun, which drops half the gorge into black shade. The moss is greenest from June to September; autumn adds gold to the birch on the rim; and in winter the path can be icy and the access road slippery, so spikes and a flexible date belong in the plan.

Every age works; the plan changes. First birthdays are about the parents and the setting — the baby in a snowsuit against a waterfall is a keepsake, and sessions stay short and close to the car. Ages three to seven are the golden years: old enough to be amazed by a geyser, young enough to show it without self-consciousness. Older kids and tweens want to feel like adventurers, so their sessions lean toward exploring — boardwalks, whale boats, the rift valley — with the birthday moment folded in. Tell your photographer the exact age and personality when booking; a five-year-old who loves puddles and a ten-year-old who hates posing get very different, equally good, sessions.

Then nobody asks them to. Our children's photographers don't run posing sessions — they run adventures with a camera present. A shy child gets space and a slow start: the photographer shoots the landscape, chats with the parents, lets the child decide when to get curious about the big lens. Iceland does the rest; it's very hard to stay withdrawn when the ground steams and a geyser is about to go. The birthday shots come from moments, not commands — the crown going on, the first look at the cake, a hand pointing at a whale. If a child truly has a rough moment, we pause, warm up, and come back to it. The gallery never shows the pause.
