About Dettifoss
Dettifoss is not the tallest waterfall in Iceland, but nothing else in Europe hits this hard: a hundred metres wide, forty-four metres down, and up to five hundred cubic metres of grey glacial water a second falling into the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon. You feel it in the ground before you see it, and the spray column stands over the canyon like smoke. In sunshine that spray hangs a rainbow across the gorge for most of the middle of the day — the frame everyone wants, and one that only works when the wind cooperates. Which bank you shoot from changes the session. The eastern side, on gravel Road 864, brings you closest to the lip and the raw scale, and it is a summer-only road. The western side, Road 862, is paved from Route 1 and stays open far longer in the year, with viewing platforms, a maintained path and a safer footing for a dressed-up couple. A kilometre upstream, Selfoss spreads a wide curtain across the whole river — quieter, more graceful, and worth the twenty-minute walk. Practicalities matter more here than at most places. The rock near the falls is permanently wet and slick, the drops are unfenced, and the spray soaks clothing and lenses in minutes — a spare layer and a lens cloth are part of the kit. This is Vatnajökull National Park, so drones need permission from the park rather than a hopeful launch — check before the day. Roads to both banks close with winter conditions and can shut in a spring thaw, so confirm road.is the morning of the shoot. From Mývatn it is about an hour, from Akureyri roughly two, and in June the light lasts nearly all night.

Top Photo Spots at Dettifoss
The most photogenic locations for your Dettifoss photoshoot
The west-bank platforms
Maintained paths and viewpoints on the Road 862 side — the full width of the falls, a rainbow in the spray on sunny afternoons, and footing you can trust.
Best time: Mid-morning to mid-afternoon on a sunny day for the rainbow
Put a person in every wide frame or the scale disappears. Bring a lens cloth and a dry layer; the spray reaches further than it looks.
The east-bank lip
The gravel-road side, where the path brings you closest to the edge and the water disappearing over it — summer only, and worth the dust.
Best time: Summer evenings, when the light comes round to the west
Shoot from further back than instinct says — space around the couple is what conveys the scale. No frame is worth the wet rock at the lip.
Selfoss
A wide, low curtain of waterfalls spread across the whole river a kilometre upstream — quieter, gentler and often empty.
Best time: Evening, when low light runs along the width of the curtain
Compose low and wide with people to one side; Selfoss reads as a horizon, not a column. Allow twenty minutes' walk each way.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a photoshoot at Dettifoss cost?
Each photographer sets their own price for a photoshoot at Dettifoss: every package on their profile shows an all-inclusive price, and nothing is added at checkout. Packages vary by duration and the number of edited photos — a short session covers the viewpoints on one bank, a longer one adds the twenty-minute walk upstream to Selfoss or continues to Mývatn, about an hour away.
Which side of Dettifoss is better for photos, east or west?
They give different pictures. The eastern bank, on gravel Road 864, brings you closest to the lip and the raw scale — it is a summer-only road and rough in a small car. The western bank, Road 862, is paved from Route 1, open far longer in the year, and has maintained paths and platforms, which is the safer footing for a dressed-up couple. Rainbows hang over the gorge from mid-morning through the middle of the day when the sun is out.
Are drones allowed at Dettifoss?
Not without permission. Dettifoss and Selfoss lie inside Vatnajökull National Park, where drone flights need a permit from the park rather than a hopeful launch, and the rules change with the season and the site. Ask the park before the day. The same goes for stepping off the marked paths: the rock near the lip is permanently wet, the edges are unfenced, and the spray makes it slicker than it looks.
What should we wear at Dettifoss, and when is it open?
Waterproofs and shoes with grip — the spray off a river this size soaks clothing and lenses within minutes, so bring a dry layer to change into for the portraits away from the falls. Roads to both banks close with winter conditions and can shut during a spring thaw, so confirm road.is on the morning of the shoot and keep a Mývatn alternative in the plan. In June the light lasts almost all night, which makes a late-evening session here unusually quiet.
What's the best age for a kids birthday photoshoot in Iceland?
Every age works; the plan changes. First birthdays are about the parents and the setting — the baby in a snowsuit against a waterfall is a keepsake, and sessions stay short and close to the car. Ages three to seven are the golden years: old enough to be amazed by a geyser, young enough to show it without self-consciousness. Older kids and tweens want to feel like adventurers, so their sessions lean toward exploring — boardwalks, whale boats, the rift valley — with the birthday moment folded in. Tell your photographer the exact age and personality when booking; a five-year-old who loves puddles and a ten-year-old who hates posing get very different, equally good, sessions.
What if my child is shy or doesn't want to pose?
Then nobody asks them to. Our children's photographers don't run posing sessions — they run adventures with a camera present. A shy child gets space and a slow start: the photographer shoots the landscape, chats with the parents, lets the child decide when to get curious about the big lens. Iceland does the rest; it's very hard to stay withdrawn when the ground steams and a geyser is about to go. The birthday shots come from moments, not commands — the crown going on, the first look at the cake, a hand pointing at a whale. If a child truly has a rough moment, we pause, warm up, and come back to it. The gallery never shows the pause.
