Cómo llegarFrom roughly May to mid-August, puffins nest in burrows along the grassy cliff tops of Dyrhólaey, and on a calm evening they come and go a few metres from the marked viewpoints. They are small, fast and comically unbothered by people, which makes them a genuine addition to a summer session rather than a separate wildlife trip.
A long lens is the whole technique: 200mm and up, from the marked areas, without stepping onto the grass where the burrows are. Evening is the busiest time on the cliff, and it happens to be when the light is best. Puffin frames work as a set of details between the landscape frames — the birds are not going to pose with your couple.
The nesting season also brings closures: parts of the reserve, and sometimes the upper road, shut for weeks or overnight, and the dates change every year. Check the current closure before fixing a date, keep Vík and Reynisfjara as the alternative, and treat the ropes as absolute — the burrows collapse under a footstep and the season only comes round once a year.
