Víkurfjara black beach & Reynisdrangar

Víkurfjara is the beach you walk to from the village: a long sweep of black sand and pebbles with the jagged Reynisdrangar stacks standing in the surf to the west. It faces the same ocean as Reynisfjara around the headland but takes the waves at a gentler angle, and there is room to spread out until the nearest person is a dot — which is exactly what black-sand portraits want.

Shoot west along the waterline so the stacks anchor the frame; at golden hour they go to silhouette and the wet sand mirrors whatever colour the sky produces. Overcast days — most days — are no loss: black sand, white surf and grey sky make a natural monochrome that photographs beautifully. In June and July, lupine fields between the village and the dunes add a purple foreground with the stacks behind.

The ocean rule is not decoration: this coast produces sneaker waves that run far beyond the visible wet line, and people are caught every year. Keep the couple well up the beach, never turn your back on the water for a pose, and let the photographer — not the composition — set how close to the surf you work. Wind is strong more often than not; embrace movement in hair and coats rather than fighting it.
