The west end of the falls path

A few hundred metres along the marked path, where the falls thin out and the crowd disappears.

Route anzeigen

The path continues west from the main platform along the top of the bank, and most visitors do not follow it far. A few hundred metres along, the falls become quieter and more intricate — single ribbons over black rock, moss between them, the river opening below — and you can work without waiting for a gap in the queue.

This is where the unhurried frames happen: a couple walking the path, sitting on the bank, framed by birch that turns gold in autumn. The scale is smaller and more intimate than the main view, which suits close portraits, and the background stays unmistakably Hraunfossar.

The path is level and easy, gravel underfoot, with railings where it matters. Do not step past them onto the lava edge: it is loose, and the drop to the river is real. In winter this section ices earlier than the platform because it gets less traffic.
